As a company, Tesco recognises that our people are our greatest asset, and we strive to support our colleagues to grow and adapt to the changing world of work. We evolved our learning framework to equip store colleagues with skills that allowed them to work where, when and how it suits their lives. We partnered with Skillcast to create a bespoke learning experience for each employee. It uses dynamic assignments and deadlines to help learners plan and lead their journey. By restructuring our learning portal, we were also able to improve accessibility, user experience and adoption.

Skillcast
The challenge
With Tesco putting people at the centre of everything they do, they created a forward-looking, multi-skilled Capability team to head up areas such as workforce learning and talent development.
One of their tasks was conducting an end-to-end review of Tesco’s learning and development (L&D) offering. As part of that, they formulated a comprehensive skills framework to deliver a transformative L&D programme.
The framework needed to adapt, upskill and reskill Tesco’s workforce, preparing them to face future challenges head-on. To help achieve their goals, they partnered with Skillcast.
Some key statistics
The solution
The Capability team leveraged the Skillcast Learning Management System (LMS) to seamlessly implement the framework. By doing that, they enabled over 330,000 learners to acquire new skills and unleash their full potential.
Skillcast's technical expertise and innovative approach played a pivotal role. Using complex data integrations and sophisticated algorithms, we provided invaluable support in configuring the LMS, delivering a highly personalised learning journey for all employees.
Our LMS enabled staff to assign themselves additional training to acquire new skills that weren’t necessarily needed for their current position. It digitally recorded this, as well as the mandatory capabilities required for their present role.
This game-changing solution empowered managers to assign or remove employees’ skills training as part of their development or to meet local demand.
Outcomes
The initiative was a resounding success, upskilling and retraining the Tesco workforce, enabling them to adapt easily to new job roles and functions. Indeed, over 800,000 skills were assigned.
Alongside that, the additional LMS functionality and reporting Skillcast developed to meet Tesco’s unique demands garnered positive feedback from colleagues and managers.
With the development of mobile-first, intuitive dashboard reports, the future of Tesco's L&D programme looked bright, making it easier to enable more effective operational and strategic decision-making.
Investing in the workforce is critical to driving growth and creating a sustainable future, and Tesco and Skillcast set a benchmark for all organisations to follow.
