The challenge
During 2023, NORD/LB’s London branch had a 25% increase in staff. They tended to be younger and used to consuming content through TikTok and YouTube. Many hadn't worked in the industry before, so the training topics were new. Others came from overseas and were familiar with financial services, but not UK regulations.
Employees' first experience within an organisation is often their induction. Well-planned e-learning programmes create a strong first impression and help retain staff.
With that in mind, NORD/LB needed to ensure their training was engaging, relevant and, where possible, enjoyable.

The solution
NORD/LB chose Skillcast Compliance Bites – short microlearning videos on specific areas, such as insider trading, special category data, tipping off and whistleblowing. They brought topics to life in just a few minutes through animation, engaging characters and relatable storylines.
NORD/LB was creative, combining Compliance Bites with Skillcast's regulatory technology features and developing learning paths around topics.
One example was logging face-to-face training via Training360, followed by Compliance Bites modules, and finishing the learning journey with reading and attesting to a related company policy.
The flexibility of our Compliance Bites made it much easier for NORD/LB to assign relevant training to individuals. Across induction meetings and learning paths, they helped introduce employees to new topics before doing a full-length module.
The outcomes
A powerful element of NORD/LB's solution was the ability to run reports for auditing purposes. This evidenced that offline and digital training were completed, and policies read and attested to.
In the year Compliance Bites was introduced, learners covered more topics than previously. The bank assigned full-length modules for the most important areas, then used microlearning for others, which, while important, shouldn’t take up too much time.
New joiners had a better experience and were eased into their training through engaging, easily understood, bite-sized modules with short assessments to test knowledge and build confidence.
Following the introduction of Compliance Bites, the bank saw increased pass rates and scores in related full-length e-training modules.
