Industry recognition for Skillcast
The Learning and Performance Institute (LPI) Learning Technologies Awards recognise projects that use new or innovative methods in groundbreaking ways.
The technology we developed for Société Générale provided a uniquely high level of reporting metrics via a third-party learning management system (LMS), beating over 100 entries to be shortlisted.
The challenge
As part of its knowledge assurance process, Société Générale conducted spot checks to determine understanding within the compliance team across key topics.
Traditionally, a senior member of staff carried them out face-to-face (F2F). However, that reduced objectivity and consistency, so the bank needed an impartial alternative. The solution had to fulfil four key requirements:
-
Fair, objective knowledge check
-
Fun and engaging
-
Incentivise proactiveness and individual responsibility
-
Provide analysis for targeted training

The solution
Société Générale decided the gamification element of Skillcast's intelligent learning solution would best fit their objectives.
Why? Our approach tapped into the following elements using simple gameplay, with an emphasis on feedback and peer-to-peer comparison to encourage competition.

Skillcast’s solution also provided powerful management information. Questions could be grouped by topic (learning objective), then broken down by department, manager or geography. Other reasons we stood out included:
- Shareable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM)-compliant
- Société Générale could use its own learning management system (LMS)
- Flexible, thanks to seamless delivery on desktop, mobile and desktop
- Provided advanced reporting metrics and detailed analytics
Furthermore, unlike other solutions, our gamified learning boasted a groundbreaking feature – confidence levels.
Employees were given short, realistic scenarios, based on key points from Société Générale’s compliance manual. They were tested on them and asked to give confidence levels in their answers.
The questions were structured using internal compliance topics, such as client protection and market integrity. Various experts with different backgrounds participated in the exercise, helping create real-life scenarios that staff could relate to.

The outcomes
The gamified solution decreased time spent on e-learning. Moreover, Skillcast's sophisticated reporting and metrics enabled Société Générale to:
- Identify weak points, red flags and knowledge gaps
- Plan relevant, adaptive future training
With questions linked to compliance themes, management could easily spot where team members needed to develop knowledge in their immediate remit, but also at department level.
The leader board showed learners where they ranked, creating healthy competition, because only the top 10 in each department were shown.

The success of the project led to gamification becoming an established way of assessing compliance knowledge. Running annually, plans were also put in place to extend the approach to a wider audience.
