economic sanctions

Economic sanctions are prohibitions on companies and individuals residing in one country (eg the UK) against doing business with certain countries or regimes (eg North Korea), or with certain individuals or organisations (eg those alleged to be violating human rights or promoting terrorism). Companies operating in the UK must abide by the sanctions regime in the UK, about which they need to educate their employees.
